The participants of the event were welcomed by Mikhail Babich, Chairman of the State Commission for Chemical Disarmament, Plenipotentiary Representative of the President of the Russian Federation in the Volga Federal District.
The event also marked the 25th anniversary of the formation of the Federal Administration for the Safe Storage and Destruction of Chemical Weapons.
"We often say that the Federal Office for the Safe Storage and Destruction of Chemical Weapons is a unique unit. This is indeed so. Russian President Vladimir Putin, accepting the report on the destruction of chemical munitions, said that chemical weapons had been created so many times that it was possible to destroy all life on the planet. The uniqueness of this unit is that people for the first time in history had to solve this most complicated world problem, " - the plenipotentiary noted.
The destruction of stockpiles of chemical weapons Mikhail Babich called "a historical fact that has yet to be adequately assessed."
Within the framework of the jubilee celebration, state and departmental awards were presented.
Ivan Belozertsev was awarded the mark of distinction "For Merits in the Destruction of Chemical Weapons".
In the Penza region, liquidation work was successfully completed in 2015.
"During the operation of the facility, 6,885 tons of aviation chemical munitions equipped with organophosphorus poisoning substances were destroyed, accounting for more than 17% of the total stockpile of toxic agents in the territory of the Russian Federation," - the governor stated.
At present, the project of further "peaceful" use of the plant is being worked out.
