Since 2013, this educational institution was part of the College of Culture and Arts.

The school for professional training of pianists, violinists, cellists and singers was opened at the Penza branch of the Russian Musical Society on September 24, 1882. Its first director was Mikhail Kostromitinov, St. Petersburg Conservatory graduate, composer and theorist.

In 1918, the music school was renamed into the People's Conservatory. In the 1920s, it changed names two more times. First it was a senior music school, then a vocational school. In 1934, it became a college.

In 2002, the college was named after Aleksandr Arkhangelsky, an outstanding choral conductor and composer.

In 2013, the College of Music merged with the College of Culture and Arts.

This week, the folk orchestra instruments department celebrates its 85th anniversary.

Acting Governor Oleg Melnichenko made a decision on the re-establishment of the A. Arkhangelsky Penza Music College since September 1, 2021.
