In New Delhi, with the assistance of the Embassy of the Russian Federation, the Russian Center for Science and Culture, the leadership of the Delhi and National Islamic Universities, the Lermontov Readings took place in India. It was an event within the cooperation between the Tarkhany Museum and the Republic of India.
The program included a presentation of the museum, exhibitions, thematic seminars and interactive classes dedicated to the life and work of the outstanding poet Mikhail Yuryevich Lermontov.
The opening took place at the University of Delhi, where the exhibition "Reading Novel "Hero of Our Time", based on the collection of the Tarkhany Museum, was presented. Russian school students and students of the Russian department of the University visited the event. The meeting was continued by a seminar on the following topics: "The life and work of M.Y. Lermontov", "The Genius of Lermontov (poet, novelist, playwright, philosopher, artist, musically gifted man, patriot and officer)", and "Perception of Lermontov's Translations in Indian Literature". The program was prepared by the head of the Russian Language Section of the Department of Slavic and Finno-Ugric Studies at the University of Delhi, Professor Girish Munjal, who has been promoting the Russian language and culture in India for many years, for which he was awarded the Russian Order of Friendship in February 2024 for his contribution to the development of cultural ties between the two states.
M.Y. Lermontov's poems were performed in Hindi and English by students of the University of Delhi who made these translations. The National Islamic University quoted the Russian poet in his native language and translated him into Arabic.
The beginning of the partnership with India was facilitated by the participation of the Tarkhany Museum in the Intergovernmental Russian-Indian Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technical and Cultural Cooperation. During the meeting held in May 2023 in New Delhi, the parties discussed the main directions of cultural cooperation between Russia and India. A number of agreements were reached on the implementation of joint projects of the museum and the Russian House in India, as well as the Delhi University.
