An exhibition developed by the staff of the State Lermontov Museum-Reserve “Tarkhany,” the Penza Oblastal Museum of Local History, the State Archive of the Penza Oblast, and the Brest Regional Museum of Local History, titled “I Experienced the War as a Child…”, is being held in commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory.
The exhibition is dedicated to children, the most vulnerable part of the population, who became witnesses and participants in the tragic events of the Great Patriotic War. The core of the exhibition includes photographs from the wartime and postwar years, awards, documents, eyewitness accounts, and personal belongings. The display is further enriched by plein air works created by participants of the creative workshop “Povyaz,” organized at Brest State University named after A.S. Pushkin. All works are united by the theme of the tragic events in Domachevo in 1942.
“During the war, more than 55,000 children were evacuated to Penza. Among the heroes featured in the exhibition are Eduard Khil and the children’s writer Irina Tokmakova, whose childhood years were spent in Penza. Despite harsh conditions, loss of parents, hunger, deprivation, and devastation, these children made significant contributions to the Victory, working alongside adults in the home front, participating in the partisan movement, and assisting the wounded,” the organizers noted.
The exhibition project will open on July 29 at the Brest Regional Museum of Local History. The display will serve as a vivid illustration of Russian-Belarusian history, united by the theme of childhood marked by the ravages of war.
