The performance of the agro-industrial complex in the Penza Oblast was discussed at a regional government meeting.
The governor noted that agricultural enterprises achieved solid results over the past year.
"Despite challenging conditions, including returning frosts and a subsequent autumn drought, we harvested 2.6 million tons of grain crops, with an average yield of about 30 centners per hectare. Given such weather conditions, this is a very good indicator," stated Oleg Melnichenko.
He also highlighted that Penza farmers have increased their average annual gross grain yield by 1.5 times and sunflower yield by 1.6 times in recent years. In 2024, the soybean planting area was expanded by 40%, reaching over 131,000 hectares, due to high demand for the crop.
"Over the past five years, its cultivated area has grown almost fivefold," emphasized the governor. "The total soybean harvest reached 200,000 tons, a record for the Penza Oblast. Additionally, more than 400,000 tons of sugar were produced, which is another record for us."
Meat and poultry production in live weight totaled 457,000 tons, securing the Penza Oblast's first-place ranking in the Volga Federal District.
Total milk production in all agricultural categories exceeded 432,000 tons, or 116% of 2023 levels, making the region the fastest-growing milk producer in the Volga Federal District. Dairy productivity per cow in 2024 reached 10,840 kg, ranking Penza Oblast as Russia’s leader in this category.
A key priority for 2025 is the return of unused farmland into agricultural circulation. In 2024, nearly 12,000 hectares of arable land were reclaimed.
The governor also urged the regional Ministry of Agriculture to promote new agricultural processing enterprises.
"We need to focus on deep processing of our agricultural products, as this adds value, expands the tax base, and contributes to regional economic growth. This must be a priority," stressed Oleg Melnichenko.
In 2024, over 194 million rubles were allocated to support small and medium-sized agricultural enterprises, benefiting 33 businesses. In 2025, this funding is expected to exceed 204 million rubles.
Among promising development areas, the governor also highlighted potato farming.
"I believe we can make good progress in potato production. Our farmers are interested, willing to invest in irrigation and logistics systems. We need to push forward," concluded Oleg Melnichenko.
