A working meeting between Governor Oleg Melnichenko and Andrey Kaprin—Director General of the National Medical Research Center for Radiology (under Russia’s Ministry of Health), Chief Freelance Oncologist of the Russian Health Ministry, and Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Russian Academy of Education—was held at the regional government headquarters.
At the outset of the discussion, Andrey Kaprin shared his impressions after visiting the diagnostic and laboratory wing of the Penza Regional Oncology Center, where he had laid the cornerstone back in 2021.
"Your laboratory is exceptionally well-equipped, staffed by skilled young professionals, and features an excellent day hospital for chemotherapy administration," Kaprin remarked.
The diagnostic wing has been outfitted with over 3,000 units of medical and auxiliary equipment and currently performs more than 5,000 tests daily.
"Our primary goal is to increase early-stage cancer detection rates and reduce late-stage diagnoses. To achieve this, we must develop state-of-the-art surgical facilities," stated Governor Melnichenko, outlining plans for a new surgical wing at the oncology center.
The project design and cost estimates have already been completed, with positive approval from the state expert review board. A funding request has been submitted to the Russian Ministry of Health for federal budget support.
For his part, Andrey Kaprin pledged full institutional backing for the project, which aims to significantly improve cancer care standards in Penza Oblast.
