"It has become a great tradition to hold the “Maskerad” festival annually in the memory of our fellow-citizen poet Mikhail Yuryevich Lermontov”, noted Ivan Belozertsev.

“Penza has been considered a theatrical and cultural land at all times. And the opening of this festival only proves it. The audience will witness performances played by actors from Ulyanovsk, Saratov, Perm, Moscow without even leaving Penza”, highlighted the Governor welcoming the organizers, participants, and guests of the theatrical festival.

“This event has become a bright part of the cultural life both of Penza region and the country”, he claimed.

The promoters of the festival are the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation and the Government of Penza region. It has been held in Penza region since 2014 and starting from 2017 it has become international.

The program of 2019 in addition to traditional performances of theatrical groups includes theme film shows and lectures. All of them are dedicated to the works by Vsevolod Meyerhold, a famous director whose 145th birthday was celebrated in February this year.

In particular, a series of lectures “Meyerhold and cinema” are planned to be conducted by Alyona Solntseva, a theatrical and movie critic from Moscow, a culture expert, a candidate of arts, an associate professor, of sub-department of cinema and modern art of Russian State University for the Humanities.

Besides, there will be functioning an artistic producing laboratory “Following Meyerhold” prepared by students of the directing faculty of Russian Institute of Theatre Arts.

GITIS’s students together with Penza’s actors will prepare sketches on plays that were addressed at different times by Meyerhold.  The moderator of the art laboratory will be Grigory Zaslavskiy, a famous Russian theatrical critic and the rector of GITIS.

The final day of the festival will be the 31st of October, 2019.
