The official visit is being held at the invitation of Governor Oleg Melnichenko on Sunday, June 19, 2022.
As previously reported, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church will perform the Rite of the Great Consecration of the Spassky Cathedral. The Divine Liturgy is broadcast on large screens installed on Cathedral Square. The solemn service can also be seen on local TV channels and the official pages of the government of the Penza Oblast on social networks.
It is planned that in addition to the Spassky Cathedral, Patriarch Kirill will hold a working meeting with the heads of the district and the oblast. And he will visit the New Shores art estate.
Until now, the Penza diocese has received only one visit from the head of the Russian Orthodox Church. It took place in October 1999, when Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Russia visited the region.
He took part in a prayer service held in the Mitrofanovsky church at the icon of the Kazan Mother of God, and in the Divine Liturgy in the Assumption Cathedral of Penza. At the same time, on October 2, the foundation stone of the chapel was laid on the site of the former Spassky Cathedral.
