During his visit to Penza Oblast, Igor Komarov, the Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy to the Volga Federal District, toured "MedInzh", a flagship enterprise of the region’s biomedical cluster.
In 2025, the "MedInzh" Research and Production Enterprise launched serial production of intracoronary shunts—devices used to maintain temporary blood flow during on-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery.
Globally, only a handful of foreign companies manufacture such products. Due to sanctions, these firms withdrew from the Russian market, creating a critical gap filled by Penza’s innovators.
"Nearly a third of Russia’s 20 medical and pharmaceutical clusters are located in the Volga Federal District, including Penza’s ‘BioMed’ cluster, where ‘MedInzh’ is a key player," noted Igor Komarov. "With rising cardiovascular disease rates across Russia, these locally produced devices are in high demand among cardiac surgeons. It’s encouraging to see strong state and regional support—Governor Melnichenko and his team are driving industrial growth and advancing education."
The intracoronary shunts offer a significant advantage: they eliminate the need for expensive heart-lung bypass machines during surgery. Annual domestic demand for these devices is estimated at 30,000 units.
"The product is now actively supplied to Russian clinics. Last year, we sold 350 units; this year, we plan to reach 600," said Alexander Evdokimov, General Director of "MedInzh".
An alternative to CABG, coronary stents, were also showcased. In late 2024, "MedInzh" registered its first domestically produced stents.
"The enterprise collaborates with universities to recruit talent. Students gain hands-on experience through internships, familiarizing themselves with production and future career paths," explained Governor Oleg Melnichenko.
Production relies on advanced equipment, partially financed by preferential loans from the Industrial Development Fund. Komarov also inspected:
A production line for artificial heart valves;
A testing laboratory for evaluating medical devices’ biological effects.
Penza currently manufactures 70% of all artificial heart valves implanted in Russia. In 2024, the company’s revenue exceeded 1.5 billion rubles.
