The interregional sambo tournament "Memorial of the Honoured Coach of Russia V. Shokurov" was held in Penza. About 100 athletes strived for the title of the strongest on the carpet of the "Rubin" sports arena.
"Big sport is returning to the Penza Oblast today, the pandemic is surrendering, and we are very pleased that more people take part in competitions and more fans come to watch. I thank the organisers for the great work they have done on this tournament. I would like to wish all participants new victories, and may the strongest win," said Valery Savin, Acting Vice-Governor of the Penza Oblast, opening the competition.
The tournament has been held for the 11th time. For 11 years, the best sambo wrestlers from Penza and other cities have been striving for the victory in these competitions, which confirms the high level of the competition organisation maintained for a long time.
Participants are 11-13 years old. Participation in these competitions is an additional opportunity for athletes to improve their form and test their skills before moving to the next age category.
The competition is dedicated to the Honoured Coach of Russia Vladimir Shokurov. V. Shokurov was the senior coach-instructor of the Specialised Children and Youth Sports School of the Olympic Reserve on wrestling of the Regional Sports Committee. In 2006 he became the Honoured Coach of Russia. He devoted his entire career to educate the younger generation and raised many highly qualified sportsmen during his 35-year work as a coach-instructor.
