Oleg Melnichenko and Yelena Vyalbe Talk on Skiing Development in Penza Oblast

The agreement on cooperation between the acting governor and the president of the "Russian Ski Racing Federation" public organisation was signed during a working meeting on Monday, August 30, 2021.

At the beginning, Oleg Melnichenko expressed confidence that joint work will give an additional impetus to the development of mass skiing and high-performance sports in the Penza Oblast.

He noted the region's residents' interest in winter sports, stressing that there are necessary conditions for it.

"This is one of the traditional sports for the region. 15452 people are engaged in cross-country skiing," he stated.

"We will support those people and develop this sport with the methodological and mentoring assistance of the Federation," the acting governor added.

Currently, ski stadiums are equipped in Penza, Kuznetsk and Nikolsk. Departments for training skiers are open in 20 fitness and sports institutions, with over 1,800 children and adolescents attending and 52 coaches working there.

The Penza Oblast residents have achieved high sports results in different years and were part of the national team. Students of Penza State University achieved great success in cross-country skiing, those are: honoured masters of sports Aleksandr Bolshunov and Aleksey Chervotkin, as well as masters of sports of international class Anna Zherebyatyeva and Valery Gontar. The PSU team became the winner of the Russian championship among students, the silver medalist of the All-Russian Winter Universiade, as well as the silver and bronze medalist of the All-Russian students' competitions.

Yelena Vyalbe thanked the acting head of the region for the attention paid to skiing.

"I am sure that a large number of the Penza Oblast residents go skiing on weekends, when there is an opportunity to do so. And that is great because skiing is a truly mass, affordable and convenient sport for the whole family," she said.

At the end of the meeting, Oleg Melnichenko and Yelena Vyalbe signed a cooperation agreement between the Penza Oblast Government and the "Russian Ski Racing Federation" public organisation on the development and popularisation of ski racing in the region.  

The document provides for the mainstreaming of this sport among various age groups of the population, cooperation in creating sports clubs and developing necessary facilities and resources.
