March 26, the first day of the III round of the Russian Rugby Sevens Championship, was not quite successful for the Penza team – having won the opening match against Tagany Rog with a score of 29:5, Lokomotiv-Penza lost to Strela in the second match on Saturday (0:19). However, on Sunday it won a confident victory over Krasny Yar (21:5), which allowed us to reach the main semi-final from the second place.
At the semifinal stage, Lokomotiv-Penza prevailed over one of the championship favorites – the St. Petersburg Zastava-7. Conceding 0:12 during the match, our rugby players managed to turn the tide of the game and won a victory - 14:12.
In the final Lokomotiv met a long-time rival - the VVA-Podmoskovye club from Monino, a multiple champion of Russia in rugby sevens. And again, Lokomotiv had to show their character: losing 0:7, Donovan du Randt and Ilya Babayev managed to make two attempts and win with a score of 10:7.
Lokomotiv-Penza wins the third round of the Russian Rugby Sevens Championship and now has 49 points in the asset, which means maintaining the first line and increasing the gap from other rivals. Zastava-7 now has 43, Strela - 42, and VVA-Podmoskovye - 41.
The decisive round of the Russian Rugby Sevens Championship will be held in Sochi on April 2-3.
