The European Junior Fencing Championship (saber) has concluded in Tbilisi. Yaroslav Borisov, a student of the Penza Regional Comprehensive Sports School of Olympic Reserve, added a silver medal to the Russian team's tally.
The path to the final was intense: at the start of the tournament, Yaroslav secured a comeback victory over British fencer John White, followed by wins against Romania's Casian Chidu and Georgian athlete Giorgi Urushadze. In the quarterfinals, the Penza saber fencer defeated fellow Russian Pavel Graudyn.
In the semifinals, Yaroslav triumphed over Hungarian opponent Oskar Vaide. In the decisive final bout, the representative of Penza Oblast faced Furkan Yaman of Turkey, the leader of the world junior rankings. The match ended with a score of 15:9 in favor of his opponent, earning Yaroslav a well-deserved silver medal.
This marks the first European Junior Championship medal in fencing in the history of Penza Oblast. The athlete's coach is Yuri Raikin.
The training of Penza athletes is carried out as part of the implementation of the state program "Sport of Russia."
